How to Use Memes to Grow Your Business

Why Memes?

Cause memes are basically digital pamphlets of today's world.

  • They are fun.

  • They provide a very high ROI.

  • They provide a lot of information in a single frame.

  • They can be used to portray your brand image in an artistic way.

  • They can either make your brand sky rocket or if done wrong crash the same rocket in the sea of lawsuits.

The concept of Humour Targeting

Now I am not just talking about memes in here, I am talking about humour. Different types of Humour is used to target different demographics of people, hence the term humour targeting (PS. I don't know if the term humour targeting exists, I just made it up to explain my point)

"Witty humour for Gen Z and Gen Y,

Goofy humour for Gen X and Gen Y"

Witty Humour

As you can see in my above statement If your target group is from the age group 15-25 then the type of humour you need is witty or adult, depending upon your brand.

Let's me explain this with few examples:

1. Pepsi Vs. CocaCola

The rivalry between CocaCola and Pepsi is well known to everyone. But in 2013 Halloween, Pepsi took it to another level and made a direct roast towards CocaCola.

As you can see in the above picture, this is witty and is targeted towards young audience.

But what makes this case study more interesting is the comeback CocaCola came up with

This is considered one of the best comebacks in the history of marketing.

Coca cola achieved a very different spot in the minds of young audience after this meme war. This is the prime example of what I mean by being witty.

2. Durex

On the other hand, brands like Durex go with adult meme route, cause it fits better for that particular brand, here are a few examples:

As you can see from all the examples that I have shared in this category, the common theme is always wittiness. If your prime target audience is from the age group of 15-25 you need to include witty humour in your campaigns or it isn't gonna capture a young persons attention.

Goofy Humour

Now speaking about Goofy Humour, If your target audience is from the age group of 25-50 then the type of humour you need to go with is Goofy or Wholesome, depending upon your brand.

Let's me explain this with a few examples:

1. Amul

The one brand that nails this type of humour is Amul.

As you can see in the above memes, both follow a pattern. Both use a trending topic and make a Goofy meme out of that topic.

2. Parle-G

Parle-G is another great example of simple wholesome humour.

As you can see from all the examples that I have shared in this category, the common theme is always Wholesomeness. If your prime target audience is from the age group of 25-50 you need to include wholesome humour in your campaigns or it isn't gonna capture an adult's attention.

Do I need to be a Stand Up Comedian?

Now I am not asking you to be a stand up comedian neither am I expecting you to know the difference between Dry Sarcastic British Humour or American Toilet Humour. All you need to do is know your target audience in and out and formulate the appropriate content marketing strategy that you would need for your business.

At the end of the day, memes are supposed to be fun. So don't overthink it too much.
